Texel in winter is not a bad idea. I can even highly recommend it. Why? The quiet winter months are perfect for exploring this beautiful island. Deserted beaches, dunes and forest almost to yourself, walking kilometers without meeting a fellow hiker, enjoying the quietness but also the birds singing and waves breaking on the beach. Texel in winter will give you the ultimate feeling of being one with nature.
This island was still unknown territory for me and I always kept on promising myself I’d visit it soon, but I never did. That’s really a shame because there are so many beautiful places to discover in my own country, the Netherlands. Last weekend I decided it was time to go. Spontaneously we pack our bags and stay 24 hours on the island. Our aim was to discover the area by foot. Walking on vast beaches, through golden and rust-colored sand dunes and mysterious bare forests. The best thing about Texel is that there are lots of hiking and cycling trails. We choose to hike around Ecomare, on the beach and through the dunes and forest. We also hike through one of the most scenic areas of Texel, the Muy and the Slufter in the Dunes of Texel National Park. Of course a visit to Texel is not complete without seeing the bright red lighthouse, which is situated on a beautiful wide sandy beach.
In this photo blog I’ll show why Texel is worth a visit during the cold and dark months. Now I’ve been here in the winter, I can’t wait to return in spring or summer, to go cycling and hiking.
