A lot of lakes are hiding in the mountains of the Vosges. Besides the round and rugged peaks and the abundance of pine forests, the stretches of water are the main attraction. Beautiful lakes situated in a picturesque green area which will undoubtedly give nature lovers an intense feeling of happiness.
One lake is big, the other one is small. One is dark in color, sometimes as black as the night. Another lake is blue, green or so transparent that you can see the bottom. Some are glacial lakes, some have been created. The Vosges have lakes where you can walk around, along which you can take a tough hike, where you simply drive along or make a short stop or where you can plop down on a summer day, looking for refreshment. So much variety, so much to enjoy. In this article I share a selection of the most beautiful but also my favorite lakes!
Lac des Corbeaux
This is the most beautiful lake according to me. A little paradise located at 887 m and a loved spot by the locals. To go for an evening stroll or to sunbathe and swim in summer. Lac des Corbeaux is a glacial lake of 600 m long, 200 m wide and up to 27 m deep. You can explore the breathtaking surroundings best by walking around the lake. Better is to take a hike which will bring you around and above the lake. This hike will give you a spectacular view of the oval lake and the round green tops of the surrounding mountains.
Lac de Lispach
Lac de Lispach is a bog lake surrounded by scenic nature and a great diversity of flora and fauna. An idyllic spot in my opinion. This lake radiates so much serenity and has great similarities with Canadian landscapes. Stop here for a short break or a walk around the lake and you will be bathing in an oasis of calm amongst thousands of pine trees.
Lac de Longemer
Lac de Longemer is located in Xonrupt-Longemer, a quiet village nestled in a green valley. With 2 km length, half a km width and a deepest point at more than 34 m this lake is the main attraction. In summer, sunbathers can relax on one of the greens fields around the lake. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling or watersports. Both active and less active holidaymakers will enjoy themselves here.
Lac de Kruth
Lac de Kruth is located on the Alsatian side of the Vosges Nature Park. The bright blue color of the lake is already visible from the Route des Crêtes, the road that connects together the main peaks of the Vosges Mountains from North to South. Just as Lac de Longemer, Lac de Kruth is the ideal place for watersports, waterfun and other outdoor activities. Or maybe you prefer to put your towel down here on a summer’s day, which you may do of course!
The Four Lakes: Lac Blanc, Lac Noir, Lac du Forlet and Lac Vert
These four lakes can be found near the nature reserve of Le Tanet Gazon du Faing, on the Alsatian side of the Vosges Nature Park. All these lakes are accessible by car via paved and/or via dirt road. Furthermore, these four lakes are part of the famous Randonnée des 4 Lacs, a long hike along the four lakes (day hike of 18km). If you enjoy hiking, you definitely don’t want to miss this hike. Four lakes means four different decors and four times a delight for your eyes.
Obviously, this is only a selection of the beautiful lakes in the Vosges mountains. These lakes are also worth a visit: Lac de Gérardmer, Lac de Retournemer, Lac de Blanchemer, Lac de la Lande and I can continue to add lakes to this list endlessly 🙂
